6 countries, 30 days, 10280 kilometres

That’s the final stats on the African motorcycle safari.  I’d like to thank those readers who have been following this blog; I’ve appreciated your support.  It’s been an incredible experience; and I’d encourage you to make the commitment to plan and undertake your own safari if you aren’t already doing so. It doesn’t matter where. It will challenge you, but it’s worth it; because life isn’t a rehearsal. Continue reading

Final Ride Back to Pretoria

The ride into Clarens was interesting. To cut to the chase,  the temperature hung around 5.5 Degrees Centigrade, rain, wind and some potholed roads.  I refueled the bike at Wepener on the R26; and rode the final 247 kilometres into Clarens non-stop.  The only problem I had was my left foot was waterlogged; which made me feel the cold.  The right foot was OK. Last Stage of the Motorcycle Safari

Leaving Capetown to head east towards Oudtshoorn I travel along Route 62.  Route 62 is referred to as the Garden Route, but there has been an extended dry spell in recent years with severe water shortages being an issue.  I noticed dams on properties all but dry.  Travelling across the Klein Karoo it is hot with dry winds blowing. Capetown is located near a huge bay called False Bay, which is backed onto by mountains. Continue reading

Cape Agulhas – Southern Most Tip of Africa

After getting out of the almost claustrophobia inducing fog, we set out to make our way down to Cape Agulhas.  This is the southern most tip of the African continent.  It was the destination point for Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor on their “Long Way Down” motorcycle odyssey a few years ago.  For this reason, it has become a popular destination for motorcyclists since. Moving Further Southwards

Next stop is Lake Oanab Resort near Rehoboth.  As is the case with most accommodation that is unique and interesting, there is a dirt road in.  There is about a six kilometre unsealed road to get to where we need to be for the night.  It is not too bad, as the road is in pretty good shape. Across the Desert to Swakopmund

The posts to this blog are a bit behind the actual intineray, due to the limited availability of internet facilities along the way. Sorry for the delay; but I’ll “catch up” over the next few days.

Leaving Etosha, the day is a long one with close to 700 kilometres to travel.  It’s all on tar, so it’s a matter of just keeping up a reasonable pace for the day. Continue reading
